Energy costs are set to rise
Today, energy costs typically comprise less than 10% of an overall IT budget. Energy prices are, however, rising substantially faster than inflation. According to Gartner, in a few years they could rise to more than 50%. Google, as well as many other large organisations, already claim that their annual energy costs exceed their server costs.
EU and UK Carbon reduction commitments will cause a step change in the cost of energy with the introduction of carbon taxes and carbon trading.
